Quoridor Notation

An easy and novel way to record and replay Quoridor games.

Layout

Similar to chess notation, there is a column for each player. A each row contains a turn for each player. A turn is a wall placement or a pawn move.

Jump allowed

Wall placement

All lines on the board are numbered. The first character is the line on which the wall will be placed. The second character is line crossing the wall at the midpoint. It's unambiguous and easy!

Pawn movement

Use compass direction for pawn movement.
N is North, E is East, S is South and W is West.
Directions are always notated in capitals.
Optionally, the crossed lines are indicated for easy of reading.

Pawn straight move

The direction of movement is the notation.
Optionally, the jumped line can be added for clarity.
Direction in capitals, jumped line in lower case.

Pawn straight jump

A jump is indicated by the repetition of the direction.
Both of the jumped lines can be added, in sequence of crossing.

Pawn diagonal jump

NE, SE, SW and NW could sometimes indicate moves EN, ES, WS and WN respectively. But the latter notation is not used.

Extra characters

X stands for "gave up". A game is often abandoned before a player reaches the other side because the outcome is clear.
